Students develop a research question that will become the focus of their investigation. They consider the qualities of good research questions, examine research methods, explore ethical issues, conduct a literature review, and learn conventions of academic reporting. Students explain their question and proposed methods in a written rationale.
This area focuses on the skills of thinking critically, with particular emphasis on evaluating arguments. Students learn to identify the elements of argument, use mapping techniques, and consider how cognitive biases may influence thinking. They practise evaluating arguments in everyday texts and research material, applying these techniques to their own thinking.
Students learn about project management in research, including planning, timelines, resources, and milestones. They develop a written plan for their investigation, taking into account ethical and practical issues, and present their investigation through an oral report. All aspects are documented in the Extended Investigation Journal.
This area further develops skills in thinking critically, with emphasis on evaluating arguments in research material. Students apply argument analysis to research literature and their own reasoning, identify features of sound argument, and recognise cognitive bias and reasoning errors.
Students complete their investigation and write their final report, documenting their research and evidence. They analyse and evaluate their response to the research question and the conclusions drawn, using the Extended Investigation Journal to monitor and record progress.
Students develop a presentation of their investigation and findings for an educated, non-specialist audience, responding to questions and challenges. They critically comment on literature, methods, evidence, and the value of their conclusions.
