StudyPulse's AI Features

StudyPulse uses AI in two main ways: marking written answers and providing tutoring support to students. Here's what you need to know.

AI Marking for Written Answers

When students submit written responses, AI automatically marks them and provides feedback.

What the AI Does

For each written answer, the AI provides:

  1. Score: Marks awarded out of the maximum marks you set
  2. Mark Breakdown: How marks were distributed (e.g., 2 marks for explanation, 1 mark for example)
  3. Strengths: Specific things the student did well
  4. Areas for Improvement: Specific suggestions for what to work on
  5. Overall Feedback: A summary of their response

How Accurate Is It?

The AI marking is designed to: - Follow the marking criteria provided in the question - Be consistent across all student submissions - Give detailed, constructive feedback

However: AI isn't perfect. You can review any AI-marked answer to check if you agree with the marks and feedback.

What You Should Do

After students submit: - Spot-check some AI feedback to see if it makes sense - You can view all AI feedback given to students in the submission details

When to Review AI Marking

Check the AI's work when: - A student questions their mark - You're using a new type of question for the first time - The question asks for creative or open-ended responses

AI Tutor Chatbot

Students can chat with the AI tutor for help with any subject.

What Students Can Do

  • Ask questions about topics they're studying
  • Get explanations of concepts they don't understand
  • Work through problems step-by-step
  • Upload images (diagrams, handwritten work) for help
  • Get feedback on their thinking before submitting answers

Daily Limits

Students get 100 messages per day with the AI tutor. This prevents: - Over-reliance on AI instead of thinking independently - Students using it to simply get answers without learning

Most students won't hit this limit during normal study.

Tutor Personalities

Students can choose from 4 AI tutor styles:

  1. Helpful Tutor (default): Thorough explanations, patient tone
  2. Straight to the Point: Brief, direct answers
  3. Gen Z: Fun, relatable language
  4. Socratic: Asks questions to guide the student's thinking

All four give accurate information, just with different communication styles.

Chat Sessions

Students can: - Create multiple chat sessions for different topics - Continue conversations over time

Each session maintains context, so students can have ongoing discussions about a topic.

What the AI Tutor Will NOT Do

The AI is designed to help students learn, not just give answers: - It won't directly solve homework problems for them - It encourages students to think through problems - It asks clarifying questions to understand what they need - It provides hints and guidance rather than complete solutions

Submission-Based Help

When students click for help on a question they've submitted: - The AI tutor loads the question into the chat - It can reference their submitted answer - It provides targeted feedback based on what they wrote - This helps students learn from their mistakes

Privacy and Safety

What AI Can See

AI Marking: Only sees the question and the student's answer

AI Tutor: Sees: - The current conversation history in that chat session - Any images the student uploads

AI Cannot See: - Other students' work - Private information beyond what's in the conversation - Conversations from other chat sessions

Content Filtering

The AI is designed for educational use: - Inappropriate content is filtered - Off-topic conversations are redirected to learning - The focus stays on VCE subjects and study support

Managing Student Expectations

Help Students Understand:

AI Marking is Consistent But Not Perfect - Encourage students to read feedback carefully - If they think a mark is unfair, they should talk to you - The feedback is meant to help them improve

AI Tutor is a Study Tool, Not a Shortcut - Best used when they're stuck and need a hint - More valuable when they engage with questions, not just ask for answers - They still need to do the work to learn

Common Questions from Teachers

Q: Can I turn off AI marking and mark manually? A: Currently, AI marking happens automatically. You can review and discuss any marks with students.

Q: What if AI gives wrong information? A: If you notice incorrect feedback or marking, please report it to [email protected] with the specific question and submission. This helps improve the system.

Q: Can students share chat sessions? A: Chat sessions are private to each student's account. They can't share or view other students' conversations.

Best Practices

  • Encourage students to try answering first, then use AI tutor if stuck
  • Remind students that AI feedback is a learning tool, not just a grade
  • Teach students to ask good questions to the AI tutor (e.g. "Why does X happen?" vs "What's the answer?")
