Q5 Psychology Scientific evidence heading Unit 4 - AOS 3

Question 5

7 marks

A researcher is investigating the effectiveness of a new cognitive training program designed to improve working memory capacity in adults aged 65 and over. Participants are randomly assigned to either the cognitive training group or a waitlist control group. Both groups are assessed on a standardised working memory test before and after the 12-week intervention. After analysing the data, the researcher finds a statistically significant improvement in working memory performance in the cognitive training group compared to the control group (p < 0.01). However, the researcher also notes that many participants in the cognitive training group reported experiencing headaches during the program.

Evaluate the scientific evidence presented in this study, discussing the conclusions that can be reasonably drawn about the effectiveness and potential adverse effects of the cognitive training program.
