The Importance of the UN’s SDGs for Health and Human Development in a Global Context

1. Rationale and Objectives of the UN’s SDGs

• Rationale: The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were established in 2015 by the United Nations to succeed the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The MDGs made progress in several areas, but significant disparities remained. The SDGs aim to address the unfinished agenda of the MDGs and tackle new global challenges.

The SDGs address the three dimensions of sustainable development:
* Economic: Promoting sustainable economic growth, decent work, and reduced inequalities.
* Social: Addressing poverty, hunger, health, education, gender equality, and social justice.
* Environmental: Protecting the planet from degradation, including through sustainable consumption and production, sustainably managing its natural resources, and taking urgent action on climate change.

• Objectives: The SDGs are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030. The goals are interconnected, meaning that progress in one area can affect outcomes in others.

  3. Good Health and Well-being: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.
  4. Quality Education: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
  5. Gender Equality: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.
  6. Clean Water and Sanitation: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
  7. Affordable and Clean Energy: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.
  8. Decent Work and Economic Growth: Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.
  9. Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation.
